Kevin Mayer, the WR holder at the decathlon, will not begin his season in December 2023 as planned. Kevin is planning to open up in March 2024.

Mayer will not compete this weekend.

BRISBANE (AUS): Kevin Mayer has withdrawn from the Queensland State Combined Events Regional Championships taking place this weekend, where he was seeking to qualify for the Paris Olympics in the decathlon. In an online press conference from Australia, Mayer announced he had been apprehensive following a hurdles training session earlier this week, his first since the World Championships. He now plans to qualify for the Olympics during a competition in San Diego on the weekend of 22/23 March.

RunBlogRun opines: Kevin Mayer is the world record holder at the decathlon (9,126 points, September 16, 2018). For France, hosting the Paris 2024 Olympics, a healthy Kevin Mayer is a superb medal prospect in athletics for the host country.

After France’s one medal performance in the relays at Budapest 2023, the French media have shown much concern over the medal prospects for their country’s athletes.

Kevin Mayer has won some serious hardware. The French decathlon star has won two Olympic silver medals, Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020. Kevin has two gold medals at the World Champs, London 2017 and Eugene 2022, plus one European Outdoor Champs from Zurich 2014 and 4 European Indoor Champs (Gothenburg 2013, Belgrade 2017, Torun 2021 and 2023 Instanbul).
